STRASBOURG, FRANCE 4 APRIL 2019
In a resolution adopted today by the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe, the Kingdom of Morocco was granted the status of “Partner for local democracy” with this assembly of local and regional elected representatives from the Organisation’s 47 member states.
Established by Resolution 376 (2014), the Partner for Local Democracy status of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities enables elected representatives of local authorities of countries in the Council of Europe’s neighbourhood to participate, within the Congress, in strengthening local and regional democracy. The introduction of democracy at the level closest to the citizen is a fundamental factor for the development and consolidation of genuine pluralist democracy.
This makes it the first country to enjoy this status, which offers the Council of Europe’s neighbouring countries an ideal platform for dialogue and institutional contacts with their European counterparts.
The Moroccan delegation comprised of 6 representatives and 6 substitutes who will be able to sit alongside Congress members and contribute to the debates during sessions .
Mohand LAENSER, President of the Region of Fez-Meknès, Chair of the Association of Moroccan Regions (ARM) and head of the Moroccan delegation addressed the Congress members.
